The Symposium

There are vast number of organisms found on earth which interact with each other and also with the surroundings. Diversity among the living species called as biodiversity constitutes animals, plants and microorganisms. The living and non-living things in the earth interact each other which may be in a favourable or unfavourable manner in a surrounding called environment. In other words, environment can be defined as naturally built surrounding for animal and plant activities. Human beings divided the earth into many parts for the purpose of constructing homes, industries, agriculture practices and for many other purposes. All these anthropogenic activities lead to loss of natural biodiversity and many wild plants and animals losing their shelter. Consequently, the existence of lots of species of plants and animals becomes threatened. Maintenance of reserve forest becomes necessary in order to provide shelter to many endangered species of animals as well as plants. The study of biodiversity, agriculture, environment and forestry are all interconnected with each other in one or the other way. Any sort of imbalance among these four areas causes adverse effects to human beings. Since agriculture fulfils the need of hunger, proper applications of technology and fertilizers in that area is needed. Forests provide raw materials for various industries like paper and pharmaceutical, forest encloses richness in its diversity and property. Science now a days with new inventions making way to retain the natural environment on earth with lots of efforts and possible experiments, with the help of tissue culture technology, many endangered species of forests or wild trees having medicinal and industrial applications are being propagated; the application of several other techniques also have significance in biodiversity assessment, agricultural productivity and environmental sustainability, with the aim of conserving the biodiversity, agriculture, environment and forests.

The symposium will be held in Ooty, a capital town of district Nilgiris in Tamil Nadu, India known as ‘the queen of hill stations’. Ooty is the most popular hill station in South India, located in Western Ghats at the height of 2240 meters. Ooty is 88 kilometres apart from Coimbatore (Tamil Nadu) which is well-connected with most of Indian cities. Bangalore in Karnataka is 295 kilometres away from Ooty which also has connectivity with most of the cities across the globe. There are regular flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai connecting Bangalore and Coimbatore to Ooty. To reach Ooty by bus, there are several government and luxury buses from Bangalore, Mysore, Coimbatore, Calicut and Chennai. There is a railhead at Mettupalyam, 40 kilometres away from Ooty. Many trains are there to Mettupalyam from Chennai, Coimbatore, Mysore and Bangalore. Some of the trains that connects Ooty to Mettupalyam includes Ooty/Udagamandalam Passenger train, Mettupalyam Udagamandalam Passenger train, Mangalore Mail and Mangalore Express and heritage train known as the Nilgiri Mountain train which goes uphill on an exciting journey. Fortune Hotel Sullivan Court, the symposium venue is a modern-day tribute to John Sullivan, who founded the scenic town of Ooty in 1821.
